Gua Sha Therapy
Gua sha is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that has been used to treat everything from fevers to digestive problems to back pain.
This treatment is said to date back 700 years and works by creating a vacuum that helps remove the body’s toxic debris, replacing it with fresh healthy blood. During the treatment, you'll experience a warming sensation and a deep relaxation.
Gua Sha involves scraping the surface of the skin to release myofascial tension and to relieve muscles that feel stuck or tight. Red marks known as "sha" will appear and last for a couple of days or longer. Raising sha removes blood stagnation considered pathogenic in traditional East Asian medicine. Blood stagnation is considered to be one of the causes of “pain”. Often you'll only need one gua sha treatment to relieve back and or neck pain.
Modern research shows the transitory therapeutic petechiae produce an anti- inflammatory and immune protective effect that persists for days following a single gua sha treatment. Patients report immediate relief from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting. Gua Sha has been found to be effective in acute and chronic internal organ disorders including liver inflammation in hepatitis.
